The Sacrament of Waiting by Macrina Wiederkehr

Slowly
she celebrated the sacrament of letting go.
First she surrendered her green,
then the orange, yellow, and red
finally she let go of her brown.
Shedding her last leaf
she stood empty and silent, stripped bare.
Leaning against the winter sky
she began her vigil of trust.
Shedding her last leaf
she watched its journey to the ground.
She stood in silence
wearing the color of emptiness,
her branches wondering;
How do you give shade with so much gone?
And then,
the sacrament of waiting began.
The sunrise and sunset watched with tenderness.
Clothing her with silhouettes
they kept her hope alive.
They helped her understand that
her vulnerability,
her dependence and need,
her emptiness,
her readiness to receive
were giving her a new kind of beauty.
Every morning and every evening they stood in silence
and celebrated together
the sacrament of waiting.

Prayer for Abbey Way

Father God,

We kneel before You and humbly pray:
Name us O Lord,
for it is in You Your whole family in heaven and on earth receives its name.
We pray that out of Your glorious riches You may strengthen us.
We ask You to fill our inner beings
so that we together may know Christ dwelling in our hearts through faith.
We pray God You root us and establish us in love
that we may have power together with all the saints
to  grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—
that we may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
Now to God who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine,
according to His power that is at work within us,
to God be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations,
for ever and ever! Amen.

Lord God,
Root and ground us in You.
Fill and strengthen us in Your riches.
Establish us in Your love and fullness.
To Christ be the glory. Amen.
