Timeline in the Formation of the Covenant in America

Mid-1880s: Mission Friends come to America from Sweden. 

1870s: Mission Society separates from the Lutheran Church. 

1873: Swedish Evangelical Mission Lutheran Mission is formed.

1885: Swedish Evangelical Mission Covenant is formed.

1936: Evangelical Mission Covenant redefines as it expands it self understanding beyond its Swedish origins as it experiences its first name change. 

1957-8: Changes name to Evangelical Covenant Church as the church moves to be a more inclusive denomination reflecting its evangelical connections. 

1960s: Oakdale Covenant in Chicago becomes first multi-ethnic church.

1976: Vote by Annual Meeting to ordain women as pastors.

1990s and 2000s: New church plants become the major factor in church growth within Covenant.
