Mission Friends in America

The First Annual Meeting of what would become the Covenant Church in America was held in Chicago in 1885. The gathering was composed of mostly Swedish immigrants who had a high view of the church and its continuing life. With the foundational meeting defining the new church’s identity, decisive issues were discussed that helped to define the Covenant Church in America as a uniquely American Church, deeply grounded and connected to its Pietistic roots in Sweden.

The continuing story of the Covenant Church in America traces its transformation in response to the people it serves. The history of the Covenant marks a movement of self understanding from an immigrant church to a church that that reflects the changes within the United States population as whole. The gift of the Covenant is it ability to integrate and innovate as it stays true to its essential charism.
